What is… Oxybenzone?

Oxybenzone is an organic compound used primarily as a UV filter in sunscreen products. When used in combination with other sunscreen ingredients, oxybenzone serves as an effective way to prevent harmful UV rays from reaching deeper layers of the skin. This helps protect the body from the negative effects of sun exposure, including photoaging and skin cancer.

Oxybenzone functions as a UV protectant by absorbing the sun’s rays, rather than blocking and deflecting them at the surface. This prevents UV rays from reaching deeper layers of the skin, where damage can occur. Oxybenzone is a photostabilizer, meaning it works within a formula to help to stabilize other sunscreen ingredients and provide broad spectrum protection against sun damage.

In addition to UV protection for the human body, oxybenzone is also used in nail polishes and synthetic resins as a photostabilizer.

  1. oxybenzone, an active ingredient in sunscreens, penetrates the skin, gets into the bloodstream and acts like estrogen in the body. It can trigger allergic skin reactions. Some research studies, while not conclusive, have linked higher concentrations of oxybenzone to health disorders, including endometriosis in older women.
